Beautiful AND Broken
Burundi is a country located in the Great Lakes area of Africa. It has a population of 10.4 million and an area of only 27, 816 square miles making it one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
Burundi's economy is centred on agriculture with it's primary exports being coffee and tea. The GDP value of Burundi's economy represents less than 0.01% of the world's economy. In 2016 the IMF declared Burundi to be country with the lowest GDP in the world.
The country has suffered terrible genocides rooted in tribal tensions similar to those that happened in Rwanda but far less publicized. Over 300,000 people died in the ethnic conflict between 1993-2005. Recent political unrest has suffocated the economy and caused mass emigration.
